Q: Why is Halloween such a frightening time for our teeth?

A: Trick-or-treating often means sticky sweets and lots of sugar, which create the perfect environment for cavity-causing bacteria. The real villains are chewy, toffee-style sweets that cling to teeth long after eating. If your children are enjoying Halloween treats, encourage them to choose chocolate instead of sticky sweets as it melts away quicker and is less harmful. Don't forget: a glass of water after snacking can help wash away sugar before it has the chance to haunt their teeth!

Q: How can we enjoy sweet treats whilst protecting our teeth?

A: It's all about balance. Enjoy your treats, but perhaps choose a few favourites to enjoy after a meal rather than grazing on them all day. This reduces how long sugar stays on teeth and pairing sweets with food lowers the impact on enamel. And of course, brushing and flossing twice a day is essential to keep your teeth and gums healthy!

Q: Are there any sweet treats that are less scary for oral health?

A: Yes! Chocolate is usually a better option than toffees or lollipops, as it washes off teeth more easily. Sugar-free gum is neutralise acids. Savoury snacks like cheese or nuts (if age and allergy appropriate) make tooth-friendly alternatives to sweets. Enjoying treats in moderation is fine and encouraged!

OCTOBER'S LOCAL HERO: MIA GARNER - SWIMMING CHAMPION

This month's community member receiving a complimentary Dental Hygiene treatment with Dr Rosh in recognition of their contribution to our local area is 14-year-old Mia, a local swimmer who gave an outstanding performance in the British National Championships.
