Hello Readers!
'Cosmetic Dentist' is a popular search online but how much do you really know about cosmetic dentistry? At Pinner Dental Care, we're proud to have our own Dr Ash, an ace Cosmetic and General Dentist, who offers expert advice and personalised treatment plans for his patients. Below, he has answered some of your most common questions.
A: Veneers are incredibly effective, but they're not automatically the best choice for everyone. They work beautifully for reshaping teeth, closing gaps, and correcting colour that won't respond to whitening. However, they do involve removing some enamel, so they're a long-term commitment. In some cases, composite bonding or orthodontics can achieve a similar aesthetic result with less intervention. The key is careful assessment of bite, enamel thickness, and long-term goals. It's not a 'one-size-fits-all solution.
A: Teeth whitening works by lightening natural tooth structure, it doesn't change the underlying shape, translucency, or existing dental work. If someone has thin enamel, visible dentine, or older fillings and bonding, whitening may highlight contrast rather than create uniform brightness. Lifestyle factors like coffee, red wine, and smoking also influence how dramatic the result appears. A consultation helps set realistic expectations and determine whether whitening alone will achieve the desired result or if an alternative approach is better.
A: Composite bonding is often described as non-invasive because it usually requires little to no removal of natural tooth structure.
That's a major advantage. However, it isn't maintenance-free. Bonding can stain over time, especially in patients who drink coffee or tea regularly, and it may chip if biting forces are heavy. On average, well-maintained bonding can last 5-7 years before needing polishing, repair, or replacement. It's an excellent option for subtle reshaping and edge repair, but patients should understand it's a cosmetic enhancement that benefits from ongoing care.
If you're considering cosmetic treatment or would like to explore your options, book a consultation with Dr. Ash to find out what would work best for your smile.
